Unified Communications is the new paradigm in communication. The vision of Unified Communications is to merge most forms of communication into a single system that enables asynchronous communication such as e-mail, to be closely linked with synchronous / real-time communications such as telephony, IM (Instant Messaging), video calls and conferences.

 

Common to all modes of communication within unified communications is presence also known as status. In order to ensure that communication between parties is efficient and that the sender / caller chooses the appropriate method for contacting the recipient, it is imperative that the sender / caller knows the availability of the recipient, which in Unified Communications is typically displayed with an accessibility icon and possibly a short descriptive text.
